If you browse the web, you will find both positive and negative comments about owning Murray lawn mowers. In fact, recently there was a consumer safety recall of 17 models. This involved the 20, 21 and 22 inch walk behind or push mowers as well as the 30 inch riding lawn mower and the more heavy duty 28, 40, 42, and 46 inch riding lawn tractors. So, what was the safety issue? Should it steer you away from buying a Murray?
The main problem seems to have been the plastic components. If struck by unseen objects left in the grass that are tossed through the blade,(dog bones, small rocks, twigs, children's toy pieces) they could crack. There was also concern that one of these object could propel into the person powering the lawn mower, resulting in injury. But seriously, it is common sense to scan the lawn for objects prior to mowing, and the recall was a precautionary measure. No complaints had been recorded to spur on the recalling. This was something Murray initiated as a customer service concern and there is every evidence that the company fully cooperated with authorities at the Safety Commission in investigating and repairing the problem. That says something.
Murray Riding Mower
Other consumer complaints have been mainly that there is not enough information through the website to make an intelligent decision about which of the Murray lawn mowers would be the correct one to purchase. They also give spotty info about where to locate local dealers, service centers and parts. Several complaints were based on the parts themselves. They broke down frequently, and when it came time to replace the parts, they were hard to find.
However, many consumers argue that their Murray lawn mowers are a great buy and have serviced them well. This is especially true with the tractor mowers and riding mowers. Murray riding mowers and tractors come with a two year warranty and have on average a 12.5 HP engine that is fully enclosed. They have a 30 degree turning radius, which allows tight mowing around objects like trees and landscaping borders, and 15-18 inch wheel base. The blade is adjustable, and the best feature is that it can be raised when you are riding on concrete or back into the storage shed.
Murray makes both electric or gas powered walk behind or push mowers. All come with a two year warranty. The electric ones are powerful enough to allow up to a 100 foot extension cord without diminishing the power. People prefer an electric mower because there is no hassle in starting it up - no pull cords or worrying if you have enough gas in the can. Others prefer the gas models, especially if they have a fairly sizeable yard but not big enough to justify using a tractor. They are less of a hassle than dealing with cords and extensions. Gas powered mowers do, however, need to be drained and stored in off season.
One word of advice that Murray tells it customers, and it is very sound advice. Never mow over grass when it is wet. Also, always make sure you hose down the deck of the mower, even underneath. Optional mulching blades can be purchased which send the grass pieces back into the ground instead of leaving it in clump tracks or depositing it into a bag. That is an environmental advantage to owning one of the Murray lawn mowers, plus it can give you a thicker, healthier lawn.
